REAL Talk: “Design biology: Integration of biotechnology, robots and visualisation technology for development of automated mass production of elite trees.”


The REAL group introduces Jens I. Find, Associate Professor, Tissue Culture Laboratory, Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen.

Jens I. Find is head of the Tissue Culture Laboratory, where the work is focused on plant physiology and development of methods for in vitro propagation of a large variety of different plant species. One area of special interest has been development of methods for clonal propagation of conifers by somatic embryogenesis (SE). At present Nordmanns fir (Abies nordmanniana) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) are their model species, but they are involved in projects on other conifer- and angiosperm species as well.

Jens I. Find will present a new promising method called somatic embryogenesis (SE), where plants are produced from single cells without sexual reproduction. Clonal propagation of elite trees with identified traits offers a paradigm shift in the industry and Jens I. Find will report on a project that takes advantage of effective methods for SE in Nordmanns fir (Abies nordmanniana). Nordmanns fir is used for the production of Christmas trees, and has become the economically most important tree species in Danish forestry.
